No easy ride for Jenkins
July 19, 2002

Pontypridd coach Lynn Howells has insisted that new signing Neil Jenkins will receive no favours on his return to Sardis Road.

The Wales and British Lion international who is also the world record points-scorer has completed a move back to his former club after three years with Cardiff but Howells insists he should not expect preferential treatment on his return.

"I have already told Neil he will have to fight for his place in the team. He will have to prove to his fellow players that he is good enough and to everyone that he has the hunger for more success," Howells told the Western Mail.

"Ceri Sweeney is the current No 1 fly-half at the club and Neil has to battle for that position. That said, Neil is the type of guy that would not want it any other way."

Howells coached Jenkins at Cardiff for two seasons but, following the coach's departure 12 months ago, the player was also largely a Blue and Black absentee last season.

"Neil hardly played last season and that means he has some time to make up and we will have to see how he goes," said Howells.

"I think Neil will find the club is more professional on and off the field. There is a difference in the attitude of the players and the jobs they do.

"Players do a lot of school visits and generally there is a lot more to their days than turning up for training."
