Brumbies sign Giteau
August 13, 2002

The Brumbies have signed 19-year-old Australian Sevens representative Matt Giteau on a one-year contract.

Giteau, who is also a member of the Australian Under 21 side, plays five-eighth for the Canberra Vikings in the Brisbane competition, where he is the leading pointscorer.

The signing is a timely one for the Brumbies after they lost utility back Tim Atkinson and five-eighth Julian Huxley to the Queensland Reds. However, they recently signed Giteau's Under 21 teammate and halfback Matt Henjak.

"Matt is a quality young player who has already had experience with the Australian Under 21s, the Australian Sevens and now the Canberra Vikings," ACT coach David Nucifora said of Giteau. "His performances of late with the Vikings at flyhalf will give the Brumbies increased depth and his abilities at scrumhalf are an added bonus."
