Bradford show union boys how it's done
August 17, 2002

Super League side the Bradford Bulls gave their union rivals a lesson in 7s rugby at Twickenham on Saturday to claim the Middlesex 7s title in style.

The Bulls, who lost heavily to Super League rivals St Helens on Friday night, bounced back to cruise to the title with a 42-14 victory over Wasps in the final.

The squad, who didn't arrive in London until 4.30am on the morning of the competition gave the 25,000 Twickenham crowd a delightful display of 7s rugby.

With victory they emulated their Super League rivals Wigan's victory in the same competition in 1996.

The Bulls improved with every game as they ousted Leeds Tykes, former player Henry Paul's Gloucester and holders the British Army in style.

They saw little of the ball for the first four minutes of the final but struck on their first attack when Tevita Vaikona broke from his own half to score.

Again the Bulls seemed content to allow Wasps possession after the restart but they refused to give an inch and pounced again when Vaikona knocked Phil Greening over and Michael Withers went over.

Robbie Paul then left the Wasps defence standing with a clean break from halfway before Pryce sent Withers over for the try of the game.

Withers added a fourth try as Bradford moved in for the kill in the first minute of the second half and Nathan McAvoy made it 35-0 soon after.

Wasps managed the first of two consolation tries when former Wakefield rugby league winger Paul Sampson broke down the touchline but John Feeley responded at the other end.

Wasps, completely overrun and perhaps feeling the effects of a hard-fought semi-final win over London Irish, had the final say through Josh Lewsey but by then the tournament was long since over.

Newcastle went some way to making up for their narrow first-round loss to Irish by claiming the Plate competition with victory over the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment.

After losing to the Army in last year's final, the Falcons travelled south with hopes of going one better, but those were dashed as the Exiles prevailed 19-17.

The Falcons responded by ending the involvement of Wigan, who chose to field a side made up largely of players from sister club Orrell, with a comprehensive 31-5 win their semi-final of the losers' competition.

They then went on to claim the silverware with a similarly emphatic 27-7 success over the Regiment.

Jamie Noon, Michael Stephenson, Tom May and Joe Shaw were all on the scoresheet.
