Townsend to make Borders bow
August 21, 2002

Gregor Townsend is set to make his long awaited debut for the Borders in Friday's pre-season friendly against Sale at Heywood Road.

Townsend, who has won more Scotland caps than any other player, is among the substitutes as Borders continue building towards their Celtic League campaign.

Townsend moved to the newly-formed Borders outfit from French club Castres, having helped them reach last season's Heineken Cup semi-finals, but has recently been sidelined by illness.

Gary Armstrong will captain the Borders against reigning European Shield champions Sale, with their line-up also including Armstrong's former Newcastle team-mate Doddie Weir.
