WRU announce new sponsorship deal

The Welsh Rugby Union have announced a new £1m shirt sponsorship deal with American leisure and footwear company Rockport.

The initial two-year agreement will start with Wales' four-Test autumn programme that features games against Romania, Fiji, Canada and New Zealand in November.

From this autumn, Wales' traditional red jersey will now have a black collar and black piping, plus black shorts, evoking memories of the 1970s golden era when Wales were European rugby's dominant nation.

The new away kit consists of a black jersey, with green collar and white shorts.

"These are tough times for professional sporting bodies and teams in the field of sponsorship," said Welsh Rugby Union chairman Glanmor Griffiths.

"Our link with Rockport proves that Welsh rugby is still highly valued in the sporting world, and we look forward to a long and successful partnership with them.

"This deal also strengthens our links with our official kit suppliers Reebok, who are the parent company of Rockport. Reebok are currently halfway through their second four-year contract."
