Wales set for Canberra base
September 13, 2002

Wales are almost certainly set to base their World Cup campaign in Canberra.

Wales are due to play two of their four games in Canberra, and following a fact finding mission by coach Steve Hansen, WRU chairman Glanmor Griffiths and team manager Alan Phillips a decision is expected soon.

"The welcome we have had in Canberra has been so good and so genuine that I am 99 per cent sure we will be spending five weeks of our world cup here," Phillips told AAP.

"We will use Canberra as our home base because there is very much of a community feeling here and that is just what our players and our supporters are going to want."

"We have had a look at Melbourne and Sydney but Canberra has just impressed us with its genuine warmth and the effort they have made to get us here.

"We are stuck on this community feeling at the minute, it really feels good for us.
