Davies confident of further improvement

Leeds Tykes' director of rugby Phil Davies believes his side can still improve further as they look to take transfer their strong home form into their first away clash of the Premiership season against Harlequins tomorrow.

"I was delighted with the result last week but I still think we are some way away from how I know we can play," commented Davies ahead of the clash at The Stoop.

"We have worked hard on a style of play that we are striving to achieve and we still have not produced that this season. Having said that, I am obviously delighted that we have gained the two wins and we have shown some real composure in both games at key times. We are not panicking as much as we did last year, there is a lot more composure and shape about the team.

"There are a few more leaders who have been brought into the club and I am really pleased with where we are at the moment. We are only two games in and it will get harder not easier, but there is still more to come.

"We all understood before the last weeks that this would be, in effect, harder than the Leicester match. It is always difficult to get up and play at the very top of your levels every week, but I thought we showed a lot of efficiency in the way we played and that
was the most pleasing thing. And when you play with efficiency and have a player of the quality of Braam van Straaten in your side, you are always going to be in there fighting for the points.

"I cannot praise Braam highly enough. Last season was very difficult for him after playing so much rugby. But we ordered him to have a rest over the summer and he has come back rejuvenated and Conor O'Shea was right on Sunday when he said that Braam is one of the greatest kickers of all time. But he brings so much more to the
side as well, and his partnership with Gordon Ross at fly half and Tristan Davies to the other side in the centre is working well so far.

"Last week was a difficult game for us. I don't think we had the same urgency and edge we had against Leicester but nevertheless we still provided a very competent performance, as the scoreboard showed. This week will be even tougher.

"Last season we only won one game away from home in the league at Saracens and Saturday will be a test against Harlequins at The Stoop. Our game there last season was a real low point in the campaign when we were soundly beaten, but this is a new season with new challenges and we are all looking forward to it. We will travel down on Friday and have a light training session, but I have been pleased with the players' attitudes this week.

"We have brought in Hernan Senillosa this week and he will add competition to the backs. The squad is shaping up well now and we have competition for positions throughout the squad which keeps people on their toes."

Davies has made one change to the side that beat London Irish last week with scrum half Derek Hegarty recovery from injury to reclaim his place in the starting line-up. Alan Dickens makes way to the bench. There are two changes to the replacements with James Ponton and Justin Wring coming in for their first appearances of the
season and Carl Hogg and Rob Rawlinson making way.
