Brumbies stand by Walker

The ACT Brumbies have vowed to stand by winger Andrew Walker despite his conviction for drink driving.

Walker faced Yass court on Monday charged with drink driving after an incident near his Yass home on August 24 when he crashed his land cruiser into a pole, later allegedly telling police he had drunk 12 stubbies before registering a blood-alcohol reading of 0.185.

The former Wallaby's lawyer submitted several character references, including some from his former Australian teammates, and despite asking that no conviction be recorded the magistrate replied he could not let Walker off that lightly.

Instead, Walker was convicted and fined $1,500, while his licence was suspended for a period of 12 months.

While his contract with the Brumbies has had to be renegotiated to take into account his latest indiscretion, ACT Rugby Union general manager Mark Sinderberry says the club will retain Walker.

"As an organisation we'll continue to work with Andrew as we have done in the past and we'll, probably continue to see Andrew do what he does so well and play football," he said.
