Jones hails Tooheys standard

Wallaby supremo Eddie Jones has declared the inaugural Tooheys New Cup as an 'outstanding success' following the completion of the preliminary rounds.

Jones told the Australian Rugby Union's official website that the major aims of the new competition - to raise the standard of Rugby at a club level and provide a stepping stone between club Rugby and Super 12 - were well on the way to being achieved.

"The Tooheys New Cup has taken club rugby to a new level and made it a real breeding ground for future Super 12 and Wallaby players.

"The way it has been scheduled to give clubs maximum access to representative players has really lifted the quality of players going around, and in turn lifted the standard of rugby being played.

"You only have to look at the number of contracted Super 12 players in the starting lineups to see that the Tooheys New Cup is working well," Jones said.

"Any young player will tell you that playing alongside more experienced representative players is one of the best ways to learn and improve your game."
