Shelford rings the changes
September 27, 2002

Sarries boss Wayne Shelford has rung the changes ahead of this weekend's Zurich Premiership clash with his old club Northampton.

For Saracens to even compete with Saints, the Watford-based outfit require a colossal improvement on their last two league outings when they shipped 51 and 32 points in losing to Wasps and London Irish respectively.

Shelford has again rung the changes - skipper Kyran Bracken and French ace Thomas Castaignede feature among a star-studded replacements' bench - yet he knows a third successive league defeat could conceivably consign Sarries to the Zurich Premiership's bottom three by Sunday night.

With Bracken rested, Canadian international scrum-half Morgan Williams makes his first league start, while young full-back prospect Adryan Winnan replaces Castaignede and centre Kevin Sorrell takes over as captain.

Continuing injury concerns, meanwhile, about prop David Flatman, mean that Shelford has drafted in loan signing Andy Kershaw from Wasps for an unlikely Premiership start.

"Northampton are playing some good football, and they're a well-coached side," said Shelford, in tribute to his fellow New Zealander Wayne Smith.

"But they are also my old club, and it would be good to get one over on them."

Other changes to the side that crashed at Wasps last week include
the return of Adryan Winnan at full back.

"Adryan's a young guy who's playing well," explained Wayne. "And so is Thomas but we decided to give the start to the younger guy this time to give Thomas a chance to get his breath back and recover from a few knocks last weekend. Besides, we're quite likely to use him during the game."

"Kyran's taken a bit of a bashing in the last four games so we're giving a first start to Morgan (Williams), who, if I'm honest, would have had a chance earlier had he not taken a knock in
training. Both of them are test quality footballers and it's important for both of them to be fresh and I'm looking forward to seeing Morgan on Saturday in his first game."

"In the pack we've taken the step to bring a prop on loan due to the uncertainty over David Flatman. We can't keep losing him at the last minute when we already have problems in that position so Andy Kershaw will be with us for a few weeks to hold that position. Back row wise we've lost Ben Russell after turning his ankle on Sunday. He'll be out for a couple of weeks but luckily Tony Roques is back
with us so we've moved Richard (Hill) to No. 8 and Ryan Peacey on the blindside with Chesney on the bench as an impact player."
