Davies expecting tough battle
September 27, 2002

Leeds Tykes director of rugby Phil Davies has made only one change to the side that drew with the Sharks last week with back row Dan Hyde returning after serving a one week suspension for a third yellow card.

Carl Hogg remains on the bench with James Ponton missing out this week for the clash at the Newcastle Falcons on Sunday.

Looking ahead to the clash Davies commented, "Preparations have gone well this week, although it was a little disjointed at the start of week with six players away on international training. We are obviously delighted to be still unbeaten after four games.

"However, we know that record can come to an end just as quickly and we must remain focused on the job in hand. Just as last season we ignored the league table week to week, the same is true this season, perhaps even more so.

"Newcastle have had a tough start to the season but they are a different side at Kingston Park. They have been very unlucky with injuries at the start of the season after losing some of the experienced heads but I am sure they will come out the other side stronger for it. In Jonny Wilkinson they have a player who is rightly regarded as one of the most talented footballers in the world and, as the captain, I'm sure he will be someone who will be a major threat to us on Sunday. They beat us three times last season although they were competitive games and I expect Sunday to be no different.

"Last week we knew before Sale came, they were a top side. They were runners-up last year and I was absolutely delighted when we were 26-12 up. I was a little bit frustrated because I thought we stopped playing with ball in hand when the game was there for us. Great credit to Sale - they came back and after the unfortunate sin-binning for Diego they scored two cracking tries and I would have settled for one point to be honest. It was a game where maybe we should have got the four points, but two is better than one and one is better than nothing.

"Mike Shelley and Tom Palmer both pass memorable milestones on Sunday. For Mike, he will make his 150th league appearance for the club and he has been a fantastic servant to Leeds. Through his own hard work and determination he has proved his quality amongst the best in the country and has been outstanding again this year as our captain. Tom will make his 100th appearance in all games for us and, like Mike, he has risen to every challenge he has been confronted with. He knows that he is still developing as a player but his enthusiasm and willingness to learn has stood him in good stead so far."
