Monty thrown straight into action

South African star Percy Montgomery arrived at Newport on Thursday to begin his new career in Welsh rugby - and was immediately named among a 26-man squad for the Black and Amber's clash against Swansea on Saturday.

Montgomery, who arrived on an overnight flight from Cape Town - has told Newport coach Leigh Jones that he wants to be considered for the Welsh Premiership encounter with Swansea.

And given that Montgomery is ineligible for the Heineken Cup group stage and Newport do not play in November after this weekend because of Wales' international programme, the away clash at Swansea could be Montgomery's solitary appearance until December 21.

"Percy has told us that he wishes to be considered for the game against Swansea on Saturday," said Jones.

"On that basis, we have included him in a 26-man squad.

"He played his last game in the Currie Cup two weeks ago, and is in excellent playing condition.

"However, we will see how he shapes in a training run on Friday before making any decision on whether or not to play him."

Newport, who have won just two of their 10 matches in all competitions this season, have been on 28-year-old Montgomery's trail for several months.

But it was not until the player could secure his contractual release from Western Province that the deal could be finalised.

The 50 times-capped utility back follows his former Springbok skipper Gary Teichmann to Newport.

Teichmann spent two seasons as club captain before returning home to South Africa, and is still regarded as a hero by Newport supporters.

"I am glad to be here, and I am looking forward to getting out on the field," said Montgomery.

"It is a new challenge for my career. Gary spoke very highly of this club, and he said that I would enjoy it here."

Newport's millionaire backer, businessman Tony Brown, added: "Monty has got a huge reputation, and it is important for everyone at the club to help him settle in."

Montgomery has agreed a two and a half year contract.
