Major League Rugby's big dance
November 1, 2002

Major League Rugby's major showpiece, the Championship Cup, is to be played this weekend in Las Vegas.

Winners of the eight MLR Tri-Series groups will contest the Cup, while the runners-up from each group will fight out the Bowl and Plate finals.

Among the teams tipped to feature in the Cup Final include the Seattle RFC, the Dallas Reds from the lone star state and the New York RFC. The Reds are one of MLR's founding members, having been around since the league was established in 1997.

All three clubs have been in impressive form throughout the fall season and will be looking to win the whole enchilada to add the MLR silverware to their trophy cabinets.

Other teams that could force their way into calculations include the Omaha Goats from the American heartland, the Maryland Exiles of the Mid-Atlantic region and the Chicago Griffins.

The quarter-finals are played Friday night, the semi-finals are held Saturday, with the Cup Final on Sunday.

The Championship Cup is Major League Rugby's flagship competition. MLR began five years ago with just three teams, but has since grown to a total of 26 clubs. The whole premise for MLR's establishment was to create a national competition that was as all-inclusive as possible.

The Major League Rugby season is a staggered competition with the first games being played in January and the last of the Tri-Series matches contested in October. All MLR competitions culminate in the big dance in Las Vegas in early November.
