Davies full of praise
November 3, 2002

Leeds director of rugby Phil Davies praised try-scoring winger Chris Hall following the Tykes' 27-18 victory over Saracens at Headingley.

Hall touched down in the 77th minute for a magnificent solo try, which saw him beat several players in a 70-metre dash for the line.

He has been kept out of the Leeds side by Diego Albanese, but with the Argentina winger away on international duty, Hall has the opportunity to claim the number 11 jersey.

"Chris' try was tremendous," said Davies. "The way he beat those players and then got away was brilliant.

"He has been at the club for a while now, and has got plenty of ability. He just needs confidence.

"With Diego away, he now has the chance to show us what he can do, and I hope he takes it."

Leeds overcame a slow start to up the tempo after the break, gradually eating away at Saracens' 18-10 half-time lead.

Braam van Straaten was at the centre of the Tykes' revival, landing three penalties in quick succession to put his side in the driving seat.

"I was disappointed with the first half performance, and the players were as well," said Davies.

"But we improved after the break, when we started to keep hold of the ball. We forced them to concede penalties, which Braam kicked.

"Last week's match at Bath was a very emotional fixture for us. To win there, and then fight back the way we did today, shows tremendous spirit."

Saracens coach Wayne Shelford admitted his side deserved to lose after they failed to build on a commanding first half display.

"I thought at half-time it was a game we had to show a lot of character to win," said Shelford. "We just did not convert pressure into points. We panicked a bit.

"We lost four turnover tries over the line, and you can't do that in this competition. It was schoolboy stuff.

"Our skill level let us down. There were some great individual performances, but it was not a good team effort."
