November 4, 2002

Newcastle Falcons hooker Steve Brotherstone has been forced to withdraw from the Scotland squad to face Romania in the first autumn Test at Murrayfield on Saturday.

The 31-year-old suffered a knee injury in the defeat by London Irish on Sunday and he will be replaced in the squad by Steve Scott of The Borders.

Glenn Metcalfe will take over the captaincy of the A squad for the game against Romania at Rubislaw on Tuesday.

Glasgow Warriors back row forward Jason White has been ruled out of the first Test with a neck injury suffered during the defeat by Edinburgh Gunners on Friday.

"We're optimistic that Jason will be fit for consideration for our Test against South Africa on Saturday week," said Scotland manager Dougie Morgan.

Edinburgh lock Nathan Hines has already been drafted into the senior squad for the game at Murrayfield.

Allan Jacobsen and Gavin Kerr have both been forced to withdraw from the A squad with shoulder and calf injuries respectively.

Consequently, prop David Hilton will return for his first Scotland start in over two years after his enforced absence through eligibility rules.

Revised Scotland A team to play Romania A:

G Metcalfe (capt), J Steel, A Henderson, K Utterson, R Kerr, C Howarth, M Blair, D Hilton, D Hall, C Smith, N Ross, A Hall, A Rennick, A Hogg, A Mower. Replacements: C Di Ciacca, J Brannigan, G Perrett, D Macfadyen, C Cuister, D Hodge, J Stuart.
