Fiji crush Pontypool in warm-up clash
November 4, 2002
Fiji warmed up for Saturday's Millennium Stadium showdown with Wales with an emphatic 12-try 74-16 romp over Pontypool. With Steve Hansen and Alan Phillips among the 5,000-strong crowd at Pontypool Park, the Welsh team management were given plenty to ponder as the South Sea Islanders produced a stunning second-half scoring spree to put the Welsh League First Division outfit to the sword. Fleet-footed wing Isaac Mow grabbed a brace of touchdowns in the second period to go with a stunning first-half try and Api Naevo also joined the scoring with a two try second-half show. Pontypool had taken a first-half lead through two penalties from centre Jonathan Williams and when former Newport full-back James Rowles intercepted a stray Fiji pass to race 50 metres under the posts, the Gwent side looked capable of making a game of it. But they had no answer to the pace and power of the tourists, who fielded a sprinkling of their Test players after the interval. |
