Fleck returns for Springboks
November 7, 2002

Springbok coach Rudolf Straeuli has named two new faces in his side to face France in Marseilles on Saturday night and another three amongst the replacements.

The two new faces that will line up against les bleus will be Western Province youngster Jean de Villiers at outside centre and Blue Bulls lock Bakkies Botha as a second row partner to Jannes Labuschagne.

Centre Robbie Fleck makes a return to the international fray having last pulled on a Springbok jersey against Australia 15 months ago.

The ankle injury he picked up in that game ruled him out of rugby for a year.

There was no place in the squad for centre Marius Joubert despite impressive shows in this year's Tri Nations but Straeuli insisted he was just trying his different options.

Straeuli said all the players on tour would play in the first two weeks of the tour.

The side, named after an intense 10 days of mixing and matching various combinations, shows seven changes from the team that beat Australia 33-31 in Johannesburg in the final match of the Vodacom Tri-Nations in August.

Three changes are positional in the form of Andre Venter at flank and Joe van Niekerk (flank to No 8) and Brent Russell (flyhalf to left wing), while two have been enforced because of injury with Dean Hall (left wing) and Bob Skinstad (No 8) not on tour.

Andre Pretorius holds onto the No.10 shirt with Butch James returning to act as back up from the bench.

Team:
Werner Greeff, Breyton Paulse, Jean de Villiers, Robbie Fleck, Brent Russell, Andre Pretorius, Neil de Kock, Joe van Niekerk, AJ Venter, Corne Krige (capt), Jannes Labuschagne, Bakkies Botha, Willie Meyer, James Dalton and Lawrence Sephaka.

Substitutes: Adrian Jacobs, Butch James, Bolla Conradie, Pedrie Wannenburg, Marco Wentzel, Wessel Roux and Lukas van Biljon.
