Wales v Fiji - Match Preview
November 7, 2002

Wales will be looking to build on their widely critiscised performance against Romania last time out when they welcome Fiji to the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

Wales coach Steve Hansen has handed Llanelli flanker Dafydd Jones his debut in one of six changes follwoing the 40-3 victory in Wrexham.

Hansen is looking at several options as his side build to their clash with the All Blacks on November 23.

Jones, 23, is among five Llanelli players selected, now has an opportunity to impress in the absence Michael Owen and Scott Quinnell.

Jones takes over from Owen, while Cardiff captain and openside flanker Martyn Williams is also called up and Charvis moves to number eight instead of Quinnell.

Elsewhere, Neath lock Gareth Llewellyn will extend his record as Wales' most capped forward, replacing Northampton's Steve Williams, and Hansen has changed both props, handing starts to experienced pair Iestyn Thomas and Ben Evans.

There is just one alteration behind the scrum though, where Llanelli fly-half Stephen Jones features instead of Neil Jenkins. Former Leeds and Great Britain rugby league star Iestyn Harris provides back-up for Jones on the bench.

Two players - Cardiff wing Craig Morgan and Llanelli hooker Robin McBryde - were not considered because of injuries.

Fijian officials failed in their attempts to have star centre Vili Satala fell deaf ears with Quins stating the request came outside the recommended IRB time span.

The former Fiji captain and national sevens coach and now Fijian Rugby Union boss Pio Bosco Tikoisuva revealed that the FRU had applied for Satala's release for national duty on 28 October following the second of two Air Pacific national trials that formed the basis of coach Mac McCallion's selections.

"Vili was not asked to return - which normally is a binding requirement on all clubs under IRB regulation 9 - and that has given the Harlequins an extra two or three matches of playing time which they otherwise would not have got," Mr Tikoisuva said.

Tikoisuva added that all of the other UK-based players have been released by their respective clubs, including Nicky Little from Saracens and Simon Raiwalui from Newport.

The International Rugby Board requires clubs to release players for international duty on the condition they are given 14 days notice.

"By the time we found out it was too late to go legal or anything of that nature," Fijian press officer Barry Michael said.

"I understand that the management had talked to Harlequins before that, and they had definitely talked to the player, and he wanted to play for Fiji.

"I think to be technical like this is being a bit spiteful."

When asked about the reaction of Fijian coach Mac MacCallion to Satala's unavailability, Michael admitted the former SAS soldier had been less than impressed.

"I don't think I can really repeat some of it," he said.

However, Quins team manager Scott said the decision not to release Satala at such short notice was simply a practical matter.

"The whole point of it (the 14-day requirement) is to be able to plan ahead, who is going to be available," he said.
