Foley grateful for win

Bath coach Michael Foley saluted his team's spirit and determination tonight after they recorded their first home Premiership victory of the season.

Bath, despite being without internationals Danny Grewcock, Mike Tindall and Kevin Maggs, dug deep to sink Recreation Ground visitors Sale Sharks 24-18.

It was Bath's first league win - home or away - since they toppled London Irish on September 1.

"That was a very gutsy performance by the boys. There was a lot of desire out there," Foley said.

"There has been a lot of near misses this season. We have been there or thereabouts on several occasions, and the team owed itself a win today.

"There was a real desire to compete, and I am thrilled that they can enjoy this victory, although they know that there is a hell of a lot more work to do."

Fly half Mike Catt played almost 60-minutes of today's game, but his hamstring problem is still troubling him and Bath will continue to monitor his progress on a daily basis.

Sale, who haven't won away this season, let slip a 15-8 interval advantage as Bath secured the points through a penalty try, wing Tom Voyce's first half touchdown and 14 points from the boots of Olly Barkley and Chris Malone.

Sale managed tries of their own through wing Steve Hanley and centre Graeme Bond, but they will be hugely disappointed to collect only a losing bonus point from their long trip south.

"This was a massive opportunity for us to win away from home, but we played badly, particularly in the second half," said Sharks coach Jim Mallinder.

"I don't think that we can have too many complaints about this one."
