D'Arcy drafted into Ireland squad
November 11, 2002

Leinster wing Gordon D'Arcy has been called into the Ireland squad for next Sunday's international against Fiji at Lansdowne Road.

D'Arcy, 22, who won his only Irish cap to date in the 1999 World Cup, replaces Munster back John Kelly, who was injured in Saturday's win over Australia after coming on as a replacement for the injured Denis Hickie at half-time in the 18-9 victory.

Kelly is to have a scan today to assess the damage to his injured leg.

Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan has a squad of just 22 for this middle fixture of the autumn internationals.

Stand-in captain against Australia, Brian O'Driscoll and fellow backs Hickie, Girvan Dempsey have been rested ahead of the Argentina clash on November 23 alongside forwards Reggie Corrigan, Gary Longwell, Malcolm O'Kelly, Victor Costello and Keith Gleeson, who all started against the Wallabies.

O'Sullivan will also be without 12 players through injury, including regular skipper Keith Wood, when the team to face the Fijians is named in Wednesday.

London Irish flanker Kieron Dawson has been recalled to the Ireland squad for the friendly international against Fiji on November 17.

Dawson missed most of last season through injury and has been recalled alongside fellow Exile Justin Bishop in a 22-man squad missing 12 players through injury.

Despite the injuries - including one to skipper Keith Wood - Irish coach Eddie O'Sullivan has opted to rest a number of players for the Test which is sandwiched between matches against Australia and Argentina.
