Fleck warns of Bok backlash
November 14, 2002

Springbok centre Robbie Fleck makes his international comeback after a 15-month spell on the sidelines and warned Scotland to expect a backlash at Murrayfield.

The southern hemisphere side, one of the favourites for next year's World Cup, are licking their wounds after a surprise 30-10 mauling by France at the weekend which led to coach Rudi Straeuli making an incredible 10 changes for Saturday.

Fleck, out since last August when he injured ankle ligaments against Australia, picked up another minor injury in training and watched from the stand as the tourists were dismantled by the French.

However, fully fit and desperate to get back into action, the 27-year-old said: "Any Springbok team that has been put in a corner is a dangerous team.

"We have worked hard this week at getting back to where we want to be so there's going to be a spirited Springbok performance at Murrayfield.

"The French defeat was disappointing but it certainly didn't lead to us re-assessing our chances of winning the World Cup next year. But there's no doubt it was a wake up call for us.

"I'm looking forward to the game. I've been out for a long time and I'm now treating this as my second innings for South Africa."

However, Fleck, who scored a try against the Scots in their victory in Edinburgh in 1999, paid due respect to his hosts, making all the right diplomatic noises about the difficult task his team-mates will face.

He said: "We watched the Scotland and Romania game on Tuesday and we will have another video session tomorrow.

"I think Scotland have got some great players and the one thing we have got to be careful about is their pack because a fired-up Scotland pack is always difficult to beat.

"They have got some good players among their backs and some exciting players coming through.

"And if they get their rucking going then it's going to be a tough game.

"But we don't want to concentrate too much on Scotland. We want to focus on our own game and just go out there and play some great rugby."
