Pountney nears landmark appearance
November 27, 2002

Former Scotland captain Budge Pountney hopes to make his 200th appearance for Northampton in Saturday's Zurich Premiership match against champions Leicester at Welford Road.

But he will have to wait until the day of the game to know if he is playing as head coach Wayne Smith monitors just how much the Autumn international series has taken out of his star players.

Smith, who will wait until Saturday before finalising his side, today told the club's official website: "Many of the international players are suffering from fatigue following the last three weeks.

"I want to see how they perform in training before I make any decision. There are also some players who have suffered bouts of illness recently and I would rather wait to see if they come through too."

Co-captain Pountney made his debut for Saints against Coventry during the 1994-95 season and has scored 44 tries for the club in a total of 220 points.
