Nkanunu backs Straeuli
November 27, 2002

President of the South African Rugby Football Union and chairman of the Board of SA Rugby Silus Nkanunu has spoken out in support of Springbok coach Rudolf Straeuli and SA Rugby managing director Rhian Oberholzer.

Both men have come under fierce criticism since the Springboks returned from their tour of Europe without a win.

Nkanunu has declared it is time to forget what is now history and concentrate on supporting the side in its build up to the World Cup next year.

"All rugby-loving South Africans are concerned about the performance of the Springboks and the preparations for the Rugby World Cup in Australia next year," says Nkanunu.

"In my capacity as chairman of the Board of SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd and President of Sarfu, I appeal to our supporters to be calm and support the team and the coach in these trying times. I have reason to believe that they possess the mental strength to lift their performance and put us in a realistic position to contest for, and win, the Rugby World Cup next year.

"Perhaps more than ever before, the Springboks and their management need the support of all South Africans. This is not the time for knee-jerk reaction, but words and deeds of support to our boys."

Sarfu and SA Rugby also reiterated their full support for Oberholzer and Straeuli.

"Without doubt, they have learnt from recent experiences, on and off the field, and they are putting the necessary plans in place for 2003.

"I believe there are still enough time and a lot of Test rugby to be played before the Rugby World Cup. SA Rugby remains committed to the goal of getting South Africa back to the top of world rugby.

"In conclusion, I wish to record my appreciation to all the supporters who have stood by the Springboks through tough times. To excel, our boys need support from all of us," concluded Nkanunu.
