Scotland coach Ian McGeechan has announced he will step down after the World Cup next year.

1946: Born Leeds, October 30
Club: Headingley.
First cap 1972.
Total caps: 32; 20 as centre; 12 as stand-off.
Lions Tests: 4 in South Africa in 1974; 4 in New Zealand in 1977 (one as replacement).
Career highlights:
Captained Scotland nine times 1977 and 79.
Assistant Scotland coach: 1986-88.
Scotland coach 1988-93 (including 1990 Grand Slam).
Lions coach Australia 1989. Series won 2-1.
Lions coach 1993 in New Zealand. Series lost 2-1.
Northampton director of rugby October 1994 when club had lost all matches before he joined.
Relegated to League Two 1995 but earned promotion unbeaten the following season.
In 1997, became the first man to coach the Lions three times when he masterminded a 2-1 series victory in South Africa.
Finished second to Premiership champions Leicester in 1999.
June 10, 1999: Quits Northampton to work alongside Scotland coach Jim Telfer during the World Cup before taking on the job himself.
April 2000: Guides Scotland to Calcutta Cup win to prevent England winning the Grand Slam and Scotland the wooden spoon.
December 2002: Announces decision to stand down as Scotland coach to replace Jim Telfer as SRU director of rugby.
