Fijians topple All Blacks
December 15, 2002

Fiji has beaten both Australia and New Zealand on its way to taking out the South African Sevens.

Their remarkable triumph started in the semi-finals, when they came from behind to beat Australia 31-14.

Fiji continued its run in the final, stunning the All Blacks in the first half to take a 19-0 lead at the break.

New Zealand charged back in the second half but couldn't bridge the gap with Fiji running out 24-14 winners.

The shock loss came after the All Blacks had taken out last week's series opener in Dubai.

In other results, Argentina beat Samoa 27-7 in the Plate final, Namibia pipped France 22-21 to take out the Bowl trophy, while Italy thrashed Zambia 41-17 in the Shield decider.

South African Brent Russell was voted player of the tournament. The Springboks were knocked out in the semi-finals by New Zealand.

The next leg of the IRB world series will be held in the Chilean town of Vina del Mar in January.
