December 23, 2002

Former Springbok and Wallaby Tiaan Strauss has been hospitalised after a car accident in his native South Africa.

According to the Saturday Star newspaper in the African nation, Strauss and fellow former Springbok Christian Stewart were travelling near Herold's Bay in the south when their car crashed.

Stewart was treated at a hospital before being released with no major injuries, but Strauss remains in hospital with unspecified injuries, though a spokesman did say he is in a stable condition.

Strauss began his international career with South Africa and skippered the Boks during the 1990s, but after being frozen out by then coach Nick Mallett, became naturalised in Australia and played for the Wallabies during the 1999 World Cup in France.

Strauss is godfather to Tiaan Jones, son of former Wales and British Lions scrum half Robert
