Walne pleased with brace

Former Wales winger Nick Warne, whose two tries from the unfamiliar outside centre berth earned him the man of the match award, praised Cardiff's perseverance in a 34-6 league victory over Ebbw Vale.

"In the first half we tried a lot, but their defence shut us out," said 27-year-old Warne.

"But Dai Young told us at half time to keep doing the same things, keep running the same angles and it would happen for us.

"Then, in the last quarter, we began to find the way through. After our recent defeat, we needed to do something, string a few passes together and create some space for ourselves, and we managed it today."

Coach Young credited a change of emphasis for breaking the deadlock which saw his side only 7-6 up early in the second half, despite dominating territorially.

"We were making things difficult for ourselves by going wide too early," he said. "We got a message on to take the ball forward and get behind them before trying to spread it and that seemed to work."

But Young was not happy that debutant prop John Yapp had received the club's 14th yellow card of the season and recognising that discipline continues to be a problem.

"I'm sure all the publicity about the number of cards must mean it's in the referee's mind," he said.

"But it's no good moaning about that. We've just got to be squeaky clean so that he doesn't have the chance to show any cards."
