Tuqiri impresses at 7s
February 1, 2003

Lote Tuqiri has made a sensational debut for Australia in the IRB Sevens tournament at Ballymore.

Tuqiri, who switched to rugby union from rugby league last year, set up a try with his first touch of the ball as Australia thrashed Tonga 41-0 in its opening match.

The 23 year old then played a starring role in the home team's second game, a 27-0 win over Niue before scoring a brace of tries in Australi's 35-7 win over Samoa.

Tuqiri told AAP that he was nervous about his first performance.

"I was like a mouse before the (first) game and once I was out there I had jelly legs," he said.

"It was just a relief to get my hands on the ball and get on to a proper field.

Pre-tournament favourite New Zealand was in ominous form, breezing through its three matches without conceding a point.
