USA beaten in Bowl Final
February 3, 2003

The Eagles have continued their reasonable Sevens form by making it all the way to the Bowl Final at the IRB World Sevens tournament in Brisbane.

The USA, however, ran into a Tongan buzzsaw in the Final and were beaten 29-10.

The Americans, who went 1-2 on Saturday, opened their account on Sunday with a 40-7 drubbing of Papua New Guinea in the quarter-finals.

Next, the USA took on the Micronesian island of Nieu in the semi-finals with the Eagles prevailing 17-12 in a closer than expected game.

Those results propelled the Eagles into the Final against Tonga, who accounted for Canada in overtime in the other semi-final.

The scoreline in the Bowl Final would suggest that it was a one-sided affair, and for the most part it was. The Tongans opened up a commanding lead through two first half tries and they added three more in the second period.

For the Eagles, Jovesa Naivalu (San Jose) and David Fee (Back Bay) crossed the opposition's tryline, but it was nowhere near enough as Tonga triumphed 29-10.
