Hayward still top despite bye
February 4, 2003
The Hayward Griffins remain atop the points ladder in the Nor Cal Cup competition even though they had a bye this past weekend. San Francisco Golden Gate has moved into second place with a closely fought 30-23 victory over third placed Olympic Club. The game was played at a breakneck pace and SF Golden Gate opened the scoring with a Grant Wells penalty goal. That was followed by two unconverted tries that saw SFGG jump ahead by 13-0. The O Club hit back when their center dummied a pass on the halfway and eluded the defense to score under the posts to bring the score to 7-13. A further 50 meter wind assisted penalty kick to the Olympic Club narrowed the gap to just 3 points at 10-13. A simpler kick from 30 meters, that would've leveled the game, was missed, and SFGG responded with a converted try to take the score to 20-10. There were two incidents that led to two yellow cards, followed by another six minutes later, with three yellow cards being issued, making a total of five players being sin binned. The second half started with another successful O Club penalty kick, which was canceled out by a Wells goal to make the score 23-13. San Francisco Golden Gate then scored their fourth and final try to take the score to 30-13. Good defense by both teams led to a scoreless period, before the O Club scored two tries in the dying minutes to end the game at 30-23 to SF Golden Gate. Elsewhere, San Mateo moved into a tie for third place with a 27-19 decision over the San Jose Seahawks. San Mateo reportedly marked out a narrow pitch for this home game, and it could have repercussions later in the season as the Seahawks are protesting the width of the pitch and of the goal posts. |
