Llanelli ease past Cardiff
February 4, 2003

Wales' wing Mark Jones claimed two tries as Llanelli eased to a 39-26 victory in the Welsh Premiership clash at Stradey Park.

Llanelli scored five tries to the visitors' two - but the main talking points were injuries to Wales' squad duo Jamie Robinson and Martyn Madden in the first half.

Robinson, who is being tipped to play in the Wales' centre against Italy on Saturday week, limped off with a hip problem while prop Madden has a sore shoulder.

Following a frenetic opening wing Jones went over in the left corner for the first try after just three minutes to give Llanelli a good start.

But despite home dominance in the scrum Cardiff opened up a 10-5 lead with a breakaway try for Rhys Williams and a penalty for Iestyn Harris.

That gave Llanelli something of a wake-up call and the Scarlets fought back to lead 16-10 after 23 minutes with a try for flanker Dafydd Jones and two penalties from the boot of Stephen Jones.

The match was still there to win at half-time with Llanelli leading just 19-16.

The home side raised themselves in the second half and after Stephen Jones had slotted a drop goal the forwards got in on the act with number eight Scott Quinnell and prop John Bayliss going over for tries to increase Llanelli's lead to 34-19.

There were two tries in injury time. Cardiff full-back Rhys Williams crossed first, before Mark Jones had the final say with Llanelli's fifth try in the sixth minute of added time.
