Swansea send Caerphilly packing

Caerphilly 21 Swansea 46

A strong second-half performance from Swansea saw them go through to the next round of the Principality Cup.

The try count was 5-3 in Swansea's favour with five penalty goals from Gavin Henson helping them through, although they were made to work hard, particularly in the first half.

Swansea were rocked by an early Caerphilly assault that saw a scrummage move rapidly down field with the visitors in disarray.

But they soon got their act together for Jonny Vaughton to slide over in the corner. Henson could not convert but was more successful with two penalties.

Justin Thomas kept Caerphilly in touch with a penalty before two tries warmed the home crowd.

Taunaholo Taufahema crossed after a searing break from Thomas and was followed over the try-line by Gareth Jones.

Again Thomas was off target with the boot but the Swansea lead had been reduced to just one point.

Their progress was not being helped by having flanker Dean Thomas sinbinned in the 34th minute following a high tackle.

Henson restored a four-point lead with his fourth penalty with the last kick of the first half.

Thomas and Henson exchanged penalties at the start of the second half before Scott Gibbs injected the pace necessary for Shaun Payne to cross and Rory Jenkins went hard for another, this time Henson landed the conversion to make it 16-32.

Caerphilly's hopes were fast disappearing as the rain swept in over Virginia Park.

Gibbs powered his way over for Swansea's fourth try, converted by Henson.

Conditions deteriorated but both teams continued to give the ball plenty of air and Sione Tuipulotu crashed over for a Caerphilly try only for replacement Arwell Thomas to intercept and race 22 metres for the final try which he converted himself.
