February 7, 2003

Borders lock Doddie Weir is a surprise inclusion in the Scotland A squad to face Ireland next weekend.

Weir, 32, who has 61 senior caps to his name, last featured in the international set-up two years ago.

Glasgow prop David Hilton is another veteran named by coach Hugh Campbell. Hilton is also 32 and has made 42 appearances at senior level.

Coach Hugh Campbell has not yet named a captain but stresses that there are several players who could come into contention for the position: "Jason White, Doddie Weir and Duncan Hodge are all players who could take on that role very well. From the players point of view, this tournament is of immense importance and is a definite stepping stone into the senior side."
