Wallaby hooker Jeremy Paul is a surprise inclusion in the Brumbies' squad for Friday night's trial against the Highlanders.

Paul wasn't tipped to return until as late as round two of the Super 12 season following elbow surgery, but has recovered quicker than was expected and will make his comeback in the Highlanders match along with skipper George Gregan (foot).

"While I didn't think he'd be right for tomorrow night, he's continued to improve and is now fit, keen and ready to go," ACT coach David Nucifora told AAP.

"It's important he gets some game time ahead of next week's opener. That's not a game you'd like to go into cold."

Halfback Gregan was also a doubtful starter for the opening Super 12 clash with the Queensland Reds, but having returned to full training last week, hopes to prove his fitness in opposition to All Blacks counterpart Byron Kelleher on Friday.

"I'm physically feeling quite good, it's kind of been a blessing in disguise really because I was really looking forward to getting into training once I got out of my boot," Gregan told AAP.

"In terms of match practice and being match fit, I've never really struggled ... I'll be alright. It's just a matter of seeing how this responds to the 40 minutes."
