Crusaders run riot against Hurricanes

The Crusaders have opened their 2003 defence with a 37-21 win against the Hurricanes in a scrappy Super 12 clash in Christchurch.

The defending champions led 11-8 at half-time and scored five tries to two to earn a bonus point.

Both sides struggled for continuity with the Crusaders looking slightly better organised while the Hurricanes' scrum was often driven backwards by the Christchurch pack.

The Crusaders are renowned slow starters with plenty of rust in this performance, but there were still signs of the clinical rugby that saw them complete an unbeaten season last year.

SCOREBOARD:
Crusaders 37 (Carter 2, Ralph, A Mauger, Vunibaka tries; Mehrtens 2 pen 3 con) bt Hurricanes 21 (Nonu, Ward tries; Flutey 3 pen, Holwell 1 con) at Jade Stadium.
