Tigers unlikely to appeal
March 4, 2003

Leicester look certain not to appeal against last night's decision by the Rugby Football Union to confirm Gloucester's place in the Powergen Cup final on April 5.

The Tigers have been given 48 hours to decide on a possible protest, but any complaint from the Leicester camp looks unlikely.

``We have been given 48 hours to consider our position, but it is unlikely that Leicester will appeal,'' said a Tigers spokesman.

Gloucester reached the final following a 16-11 semi-final victory over Leicester at Franklin's Gardens on Saturday.

But the Cherry and Whites were then at the centre of a dispute about front-row replacements that left referee Steve Lander with no option but to rule two uncontested scrums on safety grounds during the closing minutes.

The RFU's competitions sub-committee met last night, and after three hours of talks, announced that the result would stand.

Leicester were given the option of appealing though, but it now looks as though Gloucester's Twickenham appointment with Northampton will go ahead as planned.

It will be Gloucester's first final appearance since 1990, and they remain on course for a league and Cup double.

Northampton, who crushed holders London Irish 38-9 in Sunday's second semi-final, are through to their third English knockout final in four seasons.
