Arizona comp resumes
March 5, 2003

This coming weekend marks the resumption of play in the 2003 Arizona Rugby Union winter competition.

As Major League Baseball's so-called cactus league pre-season starts to heat up in Tempe, the local rugby club, Tempe Old Devils, will be the team to catch as the ARU kicks off the second half of its season and heads towards the finale.

The Old Devils currently sit atop the ladder on 28 points having run the table in the first half of the season. Tempe is unbeaten thus far.

Lying three points adrift in second place in the standings is Red Mountain on 25. It has dropped just the one game so far, that being a close seven-point decision to Tempe on opening day. Not only is Red Mountain one of the two form teams in the competition, but it has also garnered the most bonus points of any team along the way with five.

Rounding out the top three are the Scottsdale Blues with 15 points. The Blues may well be the surprise team to date, not because they've been playing well, but rather the opposite. Scottsdale has been one of Arizona's leading clubs in the past, but they're finding the going a little tough this year.

The bottom two teams are Phoenix on 8 points and Camelback with 3. Both clubs have been struggling in 2003 and it appears very unlikely that either team will figure in any post-season action.
