Cullen notches 50th Super 12 try
March 7, 2003

Christian Cullen crossed for his 50th try in Super 12 as the Hurricanes defeated the Stormers 33-18 in Wellington.

The Hurricanes led 19-10 at half-time and held off a strong-finishing Stormers to score five tries to two and earn a bonus point in their first victory for the season.

Cullen, who has struggled in recent years with injury and loss of form, crossed for his side's second try in the 11th minute as the Hurricanes raced to a 14-3 lead. It was also his 150th first class try.

The game was heading for a 14-10 scoreline at half-time, but the Hurricanes ensured a healthy advantage at the break with a brilliant 70m try to halfback Brendan Haami in the 37th minute. The movement was sparked by impressive outside-centre Ma'a Nonu, who had earlier set up Cullen's try.

Gaffie du Toit put the Stormers within a converted try with a penalty in the 52nd minute. But as the tension mounted Cullen was on hand to snap up a loose ball in the 62nd minute on the Stormers line and score probably the easiest try of his career.

The Stormers continued to camp on the Hurricanes line, but the home side remained solid and, thanks to some sharp work by replacement halfback Jason Spice, worked the ball back upfield for Collins to eventually cross for his side's fifth try.
