Waratahs edge out Sharks in points-fest
March 8, 2003

The Waratahs have kept the Australian flag flying with a 49-36 victory against the Sharks in an 11-try Super 12 bonanza in Durban.

The Australians scored six tries to five and led 28-19 at half-time despite playing with 13 men in the final stages of the first-half after winger Lote Tuqiri and halfback Chris Whitaker were sent to the sinbin.

The Brumbies and Reds continued their poor form over the weekend but the Waratahs return to Sydney with a perfect 10 points from their two-game, South African road trip.

The victory was set up by a sensational 11-minute period soon after half-time when the Waratahs racked up 21 points with three tries. The Sharks managed to add two converted tries to Wylie Human in the final minutes but it mattered little as the Waratahs were gone.

Captain Matt Burke celebrated his 100th game for the Waratahs in style landing five conversions and three penalties along with a typically polished performance in the field. Two of the penalties came during the final minutes of the first-half when the Waratahs were reduced to 13 men.
