Former England star Cannell dies

Dr Lewis Cannell, a radiologist and leading rugby union centre, who won 19 England caps and was part of Eric Evans' distinguished 1957 Grand Slam winning squad, died on Tuesday, aged 76.

Born in June 1926 in Coventry, Dr Cannell attended Lioncoln College, Oxford and played rugby for Oxford in 1948, 49 and 50. He also played for St Mary's Hospital, Northampton, the RAF, Combined Services, the Barbarians, London Counties, East Midlands and Middlesex.

In 1957 he played in the first two of England's Grand Slam winning matches, against Ireland and Wales. The first of his 19 England caps was against France in 1948 and the last v Ireland in 1957.
