Kerfoot is Lancs hero
May 24, 2003

Neil Kerfoot clinched the Tetley's County Championship title for Lancashire with a try-double in their 24-18 victory over holders Gloucestershire.

The 23-year-old electrician lit up Twickenham in the 18th minute when he tore through the Gloucestershire defence and 40 minutes later added his second to secure a record-equalling 17th County Championship success.

Gloucestershire led 3-0 through a Mark Woodrow penalty before Rob Hitchmough sent Kerfoot away for his first try and Norwegian international Erik Lund crashed over to put Lancashire firmly on their way.

The holders clawed back to within four points when centre Simon Martin side-stepped his way under the posts from Woodrow's perfect pass and the fly-half converted.

However, Oliver Viney - from Jay Van Deventer's break - and Kerfoot added tries to seal victory before Regan Turoa's consolation score.
