Gollings suspension reduced
June 4, 2003

Ben Gollings will take his place in England's squad for the Emirates Airlines London Sevens after the suspension for his sending off last weekend was amended at a disciplinary hearing today.

Gollings had been banned three weeks after he was dismissed by referee Nigel Owens during the 14-10 win over New Zealand in the quarter finals of the Cardiff Sevens.

But an IRB appeal panel of Prof. Lorne Crerar (SRU), Wyn Williams (WRU) and Brian McLoughlin (IRFU) altered the sentence to rule him out of three Sevens matches.

The first was deemed to be the semi-final England lost against South Africa in Cardiff and the NEC Harlequins player will sit out England's opening two Pool B games at Twickenham on Friday.

Gollings will be free to return in the final game of the day against Argentina (9pm) and for the knock-out stages on Saturday.

Matt Cannon (London Irish) drops out of the provisional 13-strong squad named earlier this week by coach Joe Lydon.

"We always felt the penalty was harsh and we're relieved to get him back for the last game on the first day and for whatever happens on the Saturday," said England Sevens manager John Elliott.

"We'd like to thank Matt Cannon, who's been an important part of the squad this season, for standing by as cover and training with us while we waited for the appeal to be heard."

Play at the Emirates Airlines London Sevens starts on Friday at 12pm and on Saturday at 11.15am.

Tickets cost £7 to £15 (Day 1) and £7 to £25 (Day 2) and can be booked through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.co.uk To book two-day tickets call Ticketmaster on 0870 4447711.
