Kiwis on course for 7s glory
June 6, 2003

Joe Lydon's England enjoyed a solid first day at Twickenham, with three wins over Scotland 29-5, Georgia 19-7 and Argentina 35-5 in the final game of the day.

Series leaders New Zealand also completed the day unbeaten and therefore remain on course to retain their IRB 7s title.

In their second pool clash Georgia opened the scoring with an early try from Giorgi Chkhaidze, which was converted to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.

Before the break, however, Ugo Monye scored England's first try and a Simon Amor conversion levelled the scores.

The second half saw an electrifying try from Amor, which he converted himself, and a further try from Pat Sanderson to seal victory.

England beat Scotland 29-5 in their opening match of the IRB London Sevens at Twickenham on Friday.

Tries from Saracens wing Richard Haughton (two), Rob Thirlby, Ugo Monye and James Brooks, plus two Simon Amor conversions, ensured that England made a winning start.

England can still finish top of the overall IRB series, but they would need victory in their home tournament tomorrow, and hope that arch-rivals New Zealand make an earlier than expected exit.

There was a surprise in England's group, with Georgia defeating Argentina 12-5, while Wales bounced back from a 19-14 loss to Australia by seeing off Samoa 19-5, which kept alive their quarter-final hopes.

New Zealand opened up by crushing Canada 36-0, and there was a similarly comprehensive triumph for Fiji, who were 36-7 conquerors of Portugal.
