In the end it was just about what any Springbok fan could have hoped for before the tournament but by the standards the majority of their fans set it will be viewed as a disappointment.

In my short stop in Cape Town before heading to Australia it was evident that amidst all the promotion of the tournament, the blanket coverage of squad preparations and 'our blood is green' banners that the sountry and the team were confident they could put their so-so year behind them and make a mark on the World Cup stage.

They left with the hopes of a nation but in the end they returned home earlier this week in gloom having failed in the two big Tests of their credentials against England in Perth and New Zealand in Melbourne.
