March 27, 2004

Australia will meet South Africa in the Quarter Finals of the Hong Kong Sevens after they made a clean sweep of their pool matches.

The Australians enjoyed a 68-0 romp over Chinese Taipei then followed it up with a hard-fought 19-12 victory over Samoa. On Friday they had opened with a 31-12 win over Namibia.

It is the first time Australia have topped their pool in this year's IRB Sevens Series, with strong performances from newcomer Matt Hodgson, rising star Adam Ashley-Cooper and Waratah scrumhalf Elia Tuqiri helping them into the Quarter Finals.

It was a dominant performance by Australia in the crunch match against Samoa. Captain Paul Warwick once again led from the front and took the team out to a 19-0 lead, before Samoa came back with two late tries.

Earlier today Australia romped in 10 tries to defeat Chinese Taipei. Elia Tuqiri had an outstanding game, while Ben Mowen came on in the second half to make his Australian Sevens debut and celebrated in style with two tries.

Canada caused one the biggest upsets of the day with a 14-12 win over Fiji, giving them a berth in the Quarters against Argentina.
