Mitchell and Hoiles make Wallaby squad
September 21, 2004

Eddie Jones has included uncapped pair Drew Mitchell and Stephen Hoiles in the Wallaby squad to tour Europe in November.

The squad also sees a return to the green and gold for both Elton Flatley and Matt Rogers, who have recovered from injury which kept them from test selection since the World Cup.

ACT Brumbies second rower Mark Chisholm will also join the squad for his first senior tour with the Wallabies, while lock Nathan Sharpe will be rested from the four-Test tour to recover from a niggling shoulder injury and gain a full off-season.

Jones claims his squad provides a good mix of depth, talent and experience for the four-week tour. "We've assembled a strong squad with some fresh new talent, some experienced players making their return from injury and those guys who have performed well already this season," said Jones.

"Having players like Mat Rogers and Elton Flatley return to the squad is a real positive, while I'm sure both Drew and Stephen, who have shown more recently in club football that they are ready to step up, will now develop even further."

Mitchell, the 20 year old Queensland Reds three quarter says it's a huge honour to be selected. "Being part of the train-on squad was great, but to actually be selected is a real honour. I know it's just another opportunity for me to learn and gain some more experience and I'm really looking forward to training and joining the guys full time," said Mitchell.

Hoiles, who has played four Super 12 matches with the Waratahs and had some strong performances for Randwick in Sydney Premier Rugby, says his selection from outside the 36-man train-on squad was certainly a big surprise. "I'd be lying if I said I was expecting a phone call from Eddie Jones, but to be picked in the Wallaby Squad is just amazing," said Hoiles. "I was looking ahead to Randwick's match against Eastwood this weekend, but now I'm just keen to learn from the guys around me, train hard and make the most of my opportunities."
