Waratahs complete Super 12 squad
November 23, 2004

The Waratahs have finalised their 2005 Super 12 squad after signing Randwick's Dwayne Haare and Sydney University sensation Alex Kanaar.

Haare has signed a one year Super 12 contract with NSW Rugby while Kanaar, Rookie of the recent tour of Argentina, has been recruited on a 12 month High Performance Unit deal.

"These guys were very impressive on the Argentine tour and they will add an even harder edge to the squad which is something very important to us," said head coach Ewen McKenzie.

"Our pre-season officially kicks-off today and we're going to have a lot of competition for starting spots."

McKenzie said that with the 2005 squad of 31 players and 5 HPU rising stars, the Waratahs are far better placed in terms of depth than the 2004 squad.

"There's been some comment about our back row selection headache for 2005 and just how tough it's going to be. Well I'm pretty happy to be in a situation where we have Palu, Elsom, Hoiles, Lyons, Kanaar, Tomiki and Waugh to choose from. One of my main jobs is to find Test quality players. The elevation of Stephen Hoiles for example last week, tells me I'm on the right track.

"One thing's for sure, there'll be no complacency in the squad." McKenzie said there is no rush to fill the 32nd contracted position. "Our new structure with the extended Academy allows for any outstanding talent to be fast-tracked.

"We need the flexibility in our contracting arrangements if Tony D'Arcy and Brian Melrose produce a player of quality through their programme, I want to be in a position where I can sign him," McKenzie concluded.
