Scotland name sevens squad
January 18, 2005

The Scotland Sevens squad to compete in the IRB tournaments in Wellington and Los Angeles next month has been selected.

Scotland Sevens coach Rob Moffat has made five changes to the squad that competed in the IRB Emirates Airline South Africa Sevens in George in December. Among the five is Kenny Sinclair who returns from an injury he picked up helping Scotland to a top eight finish in the IRB Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens earlier that month.

Also making a return to the squad is Alasdair Strokosch who travelled to Dubai in December but was called back to Scotland, before he had a chance to earn his first sevens honours, to cover injuries in the Edinburgh Rugby squad for their Heineken Cup campaign.

Glasgow Rugby flier David Millard has been called into the squad for the first time alongside The Borders duo Kelly Brown and Calum MacRae. The pair were instrumental in helping Scotland win the Plate final of the IRB Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse First Boston Hong Kong Sevens in March last year. Gala's David Gray will lead the side once again.

Moffat said: "This is a strong squad and that is exactly what we want. We are aiming to develop the strength of our squad this season and the inclusion of these five players backs that up.

"Dave Millard and Ali Strokosch will be appearing at their first IRB tournaments although Dave played for the Scottish Thistles three and a half years ago at Henley. He's got pace and is a natural runner with good ball skills. As with all our players, we feel that playing sevens at this level will help develop both Dave and Ali's games.

"I'm pleased that Kelly and Calum are back with us. They have been playing regular pro-team rugby for The Borders and that experience is invaluable. Sevens will help further develop their game as well," he added.

Scotland have been drawn against South Africa, France and Japan in the New Zealand tournament in Wellington (4 and 5 February) and New Zealand, Samoa and Uruguay in the USA tournament in Los Angeles (12 and 13 February).

On the draws for the forthcoming tournaments Moffat said: "There are always going to be tough draws. If you don't get New Zealand you will probably get a team like England so we are going to concentrate on our game and the way we perform."
