England name Under 21 team to face Argentina
June 20, 2005

England National Academy coaches Jim Mallinder & Nigel Redman have named their team for tomorrow's match against the host nation in the penultimate round of the IRB U21 World Championship taking place in Mendoza, Argentina.

With Matt Cornwell taking a well earned rest, Worcester centre Simon Whatling takes over the captaincy. "Simon has shown great leadership qualities and has performed consistently well for us. We've no doubt that he will lead by example and do an excellent job out there," said Mallinder.

"We're disappointed not to finish in the top four but this is still a very big match for us. We're playing a southern hemisphere side in front of a home crowd and all the guys are prepared for another very tough and challenging game," said Mallinder.

Said Whatling, "When Jim told me I was selected for this match and asked me if I'd be captain I was over the moon. It's always an honour to play for your country but to captain the team is even more special - and unexpected."

He went on, "We're going to go about it exactly the same as before, there are 15 leaders on the pitch not just one. I'm sure all the boys will rise to the occasion, playing the home side and hopefully I'll enjoy every minute."
