Vikings edge out Pirates in Tooheys New Cup
July 9, 2005
The class of Wallaby half Matt Henjak has helped Canberra to victory over West Harbour in round five of the Tooheys New Cup, the Vikings prevailing over the Pirates 38 to 33 at Concord Oval. Henjak crossed for two tries and set up another in the win, which sees the Vikings leapfrog Sydney University into outright second spot on the Tooheys New Cup ladder. The Vikings took just minutes to open their account, with a rampaging run by number 8 Jone Tawake setting up Julian Salvi for their first try. Daniel Callaghan converted from adjacent to the posts to make it seven-nil Canberra. The lead was soon out to 14 points, with Henjak sneaking over in the corner, which Callaghan again converted. In a bustling opening, prop Salesi Ma'afu got the Pirates on the board, brushing aside some lazy defence to score from the set-piece. Kieran Massey's conversion made it 14-7 Canberra. Henjak however would ensure West Harbour's joy was short lived, bagging his second try of the match inside the 16th minute to put the visitors on the front foot once again. Converted tries to Tim Curran and Beau Dunley saw Canberra secure a bonus point on the way to a 33-7 lead approaching half time. However the Pirates hit back with two of their own just before the break through Fotu Auelua and Chris Moore to give Wests hope heading into the second forty at 33-21. A tight tussle ensued in the second half, with Wests unable to convert twenty minutes of possession and field position into points. Canberra's defence came to the fore, at one point repelling a 14-phase attack. The dam burst with 18 minutes play remaining, Viliami Fililava bursting over off a quick tap. Massey's conversion attempt sheered wide however Fililava's try was enough to get the Pirates to within a converted try of the lead. The try also ensured the Pirates would score at least a bonus point from the match. Canberra stretched their lead again with thirteen to go, Jone Tawake crossing out wide to make the score 38-26 in favour of the Vikings. Fililava gave the home side hope with a converted try inside the final five minutes, edging them to 38-33. West Harbour threw everything at Canberra in the final minutes, packing into a five metre scrum as the siren sounded, however the Vikings defence held for a gripping 38-33 victory.
